Vevo (stylized VEVO) is a joint venture music video website operated by Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Abu Dhabi Mediawith EMI licensing its content to the group without taking an ownership stake. The service was launched officially on December 8, 2009. The videos on Vevo are syndicated across the web, with Google and Vevo sharing the advertising revenue. In my opinion music has evolved greatly since the 2000's, so company's such as Vevo and YouTube came at the right time. Vevo offers music videos from three of the "big four" major record labels: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and EMI. Warner Music Group was initially reported to be considering hosting its content on Vevo, but subsequently formed a rival alliance with MTV Networks. There are more than 50,000 videos available on Vevo.
Music company's such as MTV which now shows more reality television than music, are now in a battle with Vevo to serve the music video watching populace on the web. Vevo recently became the No. 1 online destination for music entertainment. But today, a new report from comScore shows that MTV has knocked Vevo from the top spot. This comes as no surprise, in my opinion, seeing as MTV has done a lot for music, and although VEVO has become a good music source, many people hold an alliance with MTV which has been around for a lot longer and is a much better well known brand.
According to the report, MTV received more than
53 million unique visitors in August, a 165% uptick in traffic year-over-year.
VEVO, on the other hand, garnered 49 million visitors last month. VEVO are now in second
place with MTV being the front runners going from fourth to reaching the top
spot and over taking VEVO. Statistics below indicate VEVO's current position:
