Is It Safe For Youngsters ?

Parents need to know that they should approach VEVO as they would YouTube or other video sites. Although there is plenty of safe content on this music video streaming site, there's also a lot that's inappropriate. This is one site that requires parental supervision for young kids, since they can easily find videos that include images of violence, sex, and bad behavior, just as simply as they can click on a lullaby. Also beware of the obvious ads and not so noticeable links that send visitors off to buy music and artist merchandise with just a click. With only two pages of children's music content, it's best to just have young kids skip the site altogether. (http://www.commonsensemedia.org/website-reviews/vevo)

  • Some videos promote cheating, violence against women, and the objectification of girls.
  • There are music videos that feature murder, blood, and gore, such as the Insane Clown Posse's "The Tower" which shows people being shot in the head by a sniper. Eminem's "I Just Don't Give a F---" shows the rapper strangling and pushing down an elderly woman, while "Paparazzi" sees Lady Gaga being brutalized and committing murder.
  • Lots of girls in leotards dancing provocatively, like Shakira, who in the music video for "She Wolf" spreads her legs and grinds against the floor while in a cage. Other acts like the Pussycat Dolls also dress with minimal coverage.
  • Language
The majority of songs that include profanity have been edited, but there are some songs that seemed to have slipped through the cracks, and "f--k" and "a--" can be easily heard in these videos.

  • Many videos feature commercials before their start. There are also banner ads and adds that appear alongside search results. The pop-up toolbar that can be activated within each video features the usual "share" and "embed" functions, but an Amazon button has been added to the feature that directly links the video to the single's merchandise page on the retail site.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking
Songs mention drinking and drugs, while ads for beers like Amstel Light can be seen, allowing a user to be transferred to the beer's site.
  • Privacy & safety
You can watch videos on the site without registering, or you can register for an account using your Facebook login. Registering allows you to sync with iTunes to get personalized playlists and share with Facebook friends.
